A V-Blouse Ban

The Rev. William Gerrish, M.A., for 42
years Headmaster of Magdalen College
School at Wainfleet, Lincolnshire, has
taken a firm stand on the dress of girl
pupils. V-shaped blouses are taboo. Girls
have been ordered during school hours to
fasten up blousenecks with a pin.

In a lecture at the school, Mr. Gerrish
declared that the way in which school-
girls dressed nowadays was disgraceful.
They went in flimsy white dresses, with
white shoes and stockings, as if they were
off to a party. If girls were to continue
as pupils at his school they would have to
adopt dress of a sensible and becoming pat-
tern, and they must not have their hair
cut into idiotic shapes. Otherwise, their
parents would be informed that their at-
tendance was no longer desired.6
