Ex-Boeing Man Takes Post In Missouri Firm

Gardner W. Carr, former vice president in charge of manufacturing and a director of Boeing Aircraft Company, became executive vice president today of McDonnell Aircraft Corporation, according to ammouncement by J. S. McDonnell, president.
McDonnell Aircraft is at Robertson, Mo.
Carr came to Seattle in 1923 to start his career with Boeing.  He served in production, engineering, purchasing and plant-management departments and became an executive of the firm in 1934.
Carr left the West Coast in 1937 to become vice president and general manager of Glenn L. Martin Company of Baltimore, Md.  He now is leaving Lockheed Aircraft Corporation of Burbank, Calif., where he was coordinator of British contracts for both Lockheed and the Vega Airplane Company.

Gardner Carr Rites Planned At Glendale

Committal services and internment for Gardner W. (Dick) Carr, 78, of 240 Coast Blvd., La Jolla, a pioneer aircraft engineer and production executive who died Thursday in a hospital, will be at 11:30 a.m. today in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale.
Carr, a native of Roanoke, Va., retired in 1951 as executive vice president and a director of McDonnell Aircraft Corp., St. Louis, because of illness.  He then became a management consultant for the former Marquardt Corp., a Van Nuys and Ogden, Utah, company.  He retired again in 1959.
Before World War I, during which he served as an Army captain in the American Expeditionary Force, Carr studied contract law and accounting at Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis., and chemical engineering at University of Washington, Seattle.
In the years 1921 to 1924, Carr studied aircraft design at University of California, Berkeley, and in the U.S. Air Service at Dayton, Ohio, where he was a production engineer.  Later, he held executive positions with Boeing Airplane Co., Seattle, Lockheed Aircraft Co., Burbank, and similar firms.
Carr was a member of the Authors Club of America, and the archeological Institute of America.  He had served as a vice president of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce and on the advisory board of the Seattle Salvation Army.  He was a member of La Jolla Rotary Club and St. James by the Sea Episcopal Church.
Surviving are his widow, Clare; a daughter; a stepson; two grandchildren, and seven step-grandchildren.  The family suggested memorial contributions to the Heart Fund.

    Gardner W. Carr, vice president and director of Boeing Aircraft and Boeing Airplane companies and for many years prominent in Seattle activities, today tendered his resignation to accept a position as vice president and general manager of the Glenn L. Martin Company, Baltimore.  He said he expected to leave next Monday to take over his new duties.
    Carr has been associated with the Boeing Company since 1924 starting as production engineer and rising to positions of high responsibility.  He became purchasing agent in 1926, assistant to the president in 1928, plant manager in 1931, vice president in charge of manufacturing in 1933, and has been a vice president and director of both Boeing Aircraft Company and its parent firm, the Boeing Airplane Company, since September, 1934.
    "The Boeing Company has been my life and almost my sole thought for twelve years," Carr commented today.  "It is with the very deepest regret that I am severing connections of such long standing, but no man can turn his back on opportunity."
    C. N. Monteith, executive vice president of the Boeing Company, expressed the company's sincere regret at seeing Carr leave.  "We wish him all possible success in the new position," Monteith said.
    Only last Saturday Carr was elected vice president of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce.  In addition he is a member of the board of governors of the Washington Athletic Club, the Rotary Club of Seattle and the Broadmoor Golf Club.  His home is at 3703 Cascadia Ave. where Mrs. Carr and their daughter, Annabelle, 8 years old, plan to remain a short while before moving to their new home in Baltimore.

    Two aviation men well known in Seattle have been selected for executive positions, the Associated Press reported today.
    Robert A. Mensing of Seattle, divisional chief pilot for the Northwest Airlines, was promoted to the superintendency of the company's western division, it was announced at Spokane.
    Gardner W. Carr, former vice president of the Boeing Airplane Company, was elected president of the Menasco Manufacturing Company, builder of aviation motors, at Los Angeles.  After leaving the Boeing Company two years ago, Carr served as vice president and general manager of the Glenn L. Martin Company, Baltimore aviation firm.

    Gardner W. (Dick) Carr, a 30-year veteran of the aviation industry, has been named assistant to the president of Marquardt Aircraft Co., Van Nuys, Calif.
    Carr, who began his aviation career with the United States Air Services in Dayton, Ohio, served 14 years as a Boeing Airplane Co. official.
    When he left Boeing's in the late 1930's, Carr was a vice president and director.  He held such jobs as Boeing purchasing agent and vice president in charge of manufacturing.
    After leaving Boeing's, Carr became vice president of the Glenn L. Martin Co. of Baltimore, later serving as executive vice president of the McDonnell Aircraft Co. of St. Louis.
